Pikes Peak
Elevation 14,110 feet; Lt. Zebulon Montgomery Pike discovered the mountain in 1806. Katherine Lee Bates was so inspired by the view from atop Pikes Peak that she composed the lyrics to “America the Beautiful”. Today, visitors reach the summit by cog railway, car, by foot, or bicycle.
By Rail
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway was built in 1891.
By Auto
The Pikes Peak Toll Road was completed in 1916 and is open year round, weather permitting and is the second highest highway in the world.
By Foot
For those who want to climb the mountain by foot, Barr Trail winds 13 miles and ascends 7500 vertical feet to the top. Each August, runners compete in the Pikes Peak Marathon. The 26 mile record, up and down Barr Trail is 3 hours and 24 minutes.
By Racing
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the second oldest auto race in the country and the highest motor sport race in the world, takes place every July.
From all over the world, automobiles of all kinds, motorcycles and even pro trucks and semis compete in the race. Racers negotiate 12.42 miles and 156 hair-raising turns with an average 7 percent grade increase in a little over 10 minutes.
